Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski

Dr. Zbigniew Brzezinski was national security advisor to President Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981. In 1981, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his role in the normalization of U.S.-China relations and for his contributions to the human rights and national security policies of the United States.

Brzezinski served as a counselor and trustee of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a U.S. think tank, and was a professor of U.S. foreign policy at the School of Advanced International Studies of Johns Hopkins University. Brzezinski received his doctorate from Harvard University (1953) and was a member of the faculties of Columbia University (1960–1989) and Harvard University (1953–1960).

Brzezinski passed away on May 26, 2017.

Dr. Francesco Calogero

Dr. Francesco Calogero is an Italian physicist and professor of theoretical physics at the Sapienza University of Rome. He is the former secretary-general of the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs, serving from 1989 to 1997. During his tenure, Pugwash and its co-founder Joseph Rotblat received the Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts to diminish the part played by nuclear arms in international politics and, in the longer run, to eliminate such arms.” Calogero also served as chair of the Pugwash Council from 1997 to 2002 and is currently a council member. He was a member of the governing board of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute from 1982 to 1992.

Sec. Frank Carlucci

Frank Carlucci was a former U.S. secretary of defense and national security advisor and served the Reagan administration in various capacities. He was U.S. ambassador to Portugal from 1974 to 1977, and deputy director of the CIA from 1978 to 1981. During his tenure as secretary of defense (1987-1989), he made important budget decisions on procurement, weapons systems and downsizing the military. After leaving the Pentagon, Carlucci joined the Carlyle Group, an investment partnership in Washington. He was also affiliated with the Project for the New American Century (PNAC), a conservative think tank, and was a member of the board of trustees for the RAND Corporation’s center for Middle East Public Policy.

Carlucci passed away on June 3, 2018.

Dr. Kunmo Chung

Dr. KunMo Chung is an internationally renowned nuclear engineer and science and technology educator. He currently serves as an advisor to the Korea Electric Power Corporation. He previously served as minister of science and technology in South Korea, president of the General Conference of International Atomic Energy Agency of the UN, and chairman of the International Nuclear Energy Academy. He has held positions on the faculties of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Polytechnic Institute of New York, Korea Advanced Institute of Science, and Technology, the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, and George Mason University, Korea. Chung is a charter member of the International Nuclear Safety Group and a fellow at the American Nuclear Society.

Hon. Philip E. Coyle

The Honorable Philip Coyle was a senior science fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Non-proliferation. He previously served as a senior advisor to the president of the World Security Institute and the Center for Defense Information. He has nearly 50 years of experience in research, development and testing matters and is a recognized expert on U.S. and worldwide operational military matters, nuclear weapons and nuclear weapons technology, as well as national security policy and defense spending.

In 2010 and 2011, Coyle served as the associate director for National Security and International Affairs (NSIA) in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. During the George W. Bush administration, he served on the Defense Base Realignment and Closure Commission. As former assistant secretary of defense and director of operational test and evaluation, Coyle was responsible for overseeing the test and evaluation of over 200 major defense acquisition systems. During the Carter administration, he served as principal deputy assistant secretary for defense programs in the Department of Energy and oversaw nuclear weapons at all stages of development and production.

Coyle passed away on September 2, 2021.

Dr. Anatoly Diakov

Dr. Anatoly Diakov is a professor of physics and director of the Center for Arms Control, Energy and Environmental Studies at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Diakov is a renowned expert on nuclear arms control and disarmament, and has written papers on nuclear arms reductions, the history of Russia’s plutonium production, disposition options for excess plutonium and the feasibility of converting Russia’s icebreaker reactors from using highly enriched to low-enriched uranium, among other topics.

Dr. Shai Feldman

Dr. Shai Feldman is the Judith and Sidney Swartz Director of the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University. Feldman is also an associate fellow of the Royal United Services Institute in London and a senior fellow and member of the board of directors of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard University. In 2001-03, he served as a member of the UN secretary-general’s advisory board on disarmament matters. Feldman was director of Tel Aviv University’s Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies’ Project on U.S. Foreign Defense Policies in the Middle East and the center’s Project on Regional Security and Arms Control in the Middle East.

Sir Lawrence Freedman

Sir Lawrence Freedman has been a professor of war studies at King’s College London since 1982. He became head of the School of Social Science and Public Policy at King’s College in 2000 and was appointed vice principal in 2003. Previously, he held positions at the International Institute of Strategic Studies and the Royal Institute of International Affairs. He was educated at Whitley Bay Grammar School and the Universities of Manchester, York and Oxford.

Freedman has written extensively on nuclear strategy and the Cold War, and comments regularly on contemporary security issues. He has authored several books, including “Kennedy’s Wars: Berlin, Cuba, Laos and Vietnam, The Evolution of Nuclear Strategy” and “Deterrence.” He has received numerous awards and honors, including the Chesney Gold Medal by the Royal United Services Institute in 2006 and the Distinguished Scholar Award from the U.S. International Studies Association in 2007.
