Dr. Javier Solana was the secretary-general of NATO and the first high representative for common foreign and security policy of the European Union. He also served as the secretary-general of both the Council of the European Union and the Western European Union (WEU). Previously, Solana served as a member of parliament, minister for culture, minister for education and science and minister for foreign affairs in the Spanish government. His extensive diplomatic career has been praised both for his ability to facilitate cooperation between members of NATO and for his successes as the European Union’s foremost voice in matters of foreign affairs. Solana is the recipient of several major awards for his diplomatic career, among which are the Carnegie-Wateler Peace Prize and the Charlemagne Prize. He is currently a distinguished fellow in foreign policy at the Brookings Institution.

Soltz has served twice in Iraq, once in 2003 as a captain with the First Armored Division and later in 2011 as a major, helping to train the Iraqi army. He also served in 2000 in the Kosovo Conflict as a tank platoon leader.

Song Min-Soon served as minister of foreign affairs and trade and as national security adviser under President Roh Moo Hyun’s administration. He headed the Korean delegation to the Six-Party Talks in 2005 when the September 19 Joint Statement for the Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula was adopted. Song was also previously a member of the National Assembly where he served on the Foreign Affairs, Trade and Unification Committee.

Song is a member of the Global Zero Commission on Nuclear Risk Reduction.

Dr. John Steinbruner was a professor of public policy and director of the Center for International and Security Studies at the University of Maryland. He was also chairman of the board of the Arms Control Association and co-chair of the Committee on International Security Studies of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He sat in the Council on Foreign Relations and was previously a member of the Defense Policy Board of the U.S. Department of Defense. From 1978 to 1996, he was director of the Foreign Policy Studies Program at the Brookings Institution. Steinbruner served as a professor on the faculties of Yale University, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a nationally recognized expert on foreign policy issues, with particular expertise in arms control, defense planning and international security.

Dr. Steinbruner passed away on April 16, 2015.

The late Dr. K. Subrahmanyam was a well-known Indian strategic analyst and journalist. Subrahmanyam graduated from Madras University in 1950 and soon after joined the Indian Administrative Service. In several periods of tenure, he served as the director of the Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses (IDSA), the premier Indian think tank in international relations. He also held a number of other important government positions, including chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee. He wrote many books and articles on foreign policy and security issues, and was well known for his commentaries in Indian newspapers.

Dr. Subrahmanyam passed away on February 2, 2011.

Ambassador Toshiyuki Takano is an accomplished Japanese diplomat. As a graduate of the University of Tokyo, he served in the Japanese diplomatic service in a variety of capacities. Takano became the deputy minister for foreign affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2001 and served as the ambassador of Japan to Singapore, South Korea and Germany. He currently serves as a senior advisor to the ITOCHU Corporation.

The Honorable Strobe Talbott is president of The Brookings Institution. He is an experienced public servant and journalist with special expertise in the areas of nuclear arms control and U.S.-Russian relations. Talbott wrote a series of three books on U.S.-Soviet arms control and, after 21 years as a journalist for TIME magazine, he entered the government as special adviser to the secretary of state for the new independent states of the former Soviet Union. He later served as deputy secretary of state from 1994 to 2001.

He is a former president of Boeing Germany and also served as chief executive officer of the Bertelsmann Foundation.
